Putin: EAEU should build new facilities to ensure food security

MOSCOW, May 19 (PRIME) -- The Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) should create new facilities to ensure food security and production of staple products, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday during an online meeting of the heads of the Eurasian Economic Union.

“New production facilities ensuring food security and manufacturing of staple products and other crucial goods should be created in our countries,” he said.

The EAEU comprises Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said that the EAEU states should find ways to maintain their agricultural and industrial production amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“We can often hear experts’ negative short-term and long-term forecasts for individual states, even for continents. They call provision of people with food an important problem. That is why today we need to find ways to maintain the agricultural and industrial sectors of our states with simultaneous measures to protect the people,” he said.

Putin also said that a draft of the union’s strategic development program until 2025 envisages establishment of an integrated market of goods, capital, workforce and a digital space, and well as encouragement of imports substitution processes.

The project also stipulates closer cooperation in the scientific, technical and humanitarian sectors, professional and university education, he added.
